Hi, there. I'm Jackson. 👋🏻

I'm a laid back, frugal, 30-something millennial that's always been an old soul at heart. I'm trying my best to make the most of this limited time I have to build an incredible life with my wife, our two boys, and our dog, Watson.

To really understand who I am and how I got here, we have to rewind time a few years: I was about to turn 15 when the fear of the 2007-08 Great Recession / Global Financial Crisis really started to grip the American people, and my family was no exception. I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to one specific high school teacher that I had at that time who took that opportunity to explain to his students what was going on in the finance industry and economy-at-large – and why my parents were so stressed about sudden potential job loss in a one income household in middle class America.

Through that crucible, I discovered a penchant for personal finance, and I've been afflicted with it ever since. I've spent countless hours studying money, math, careers, budgeting, investing, and spreadsheets. I was planning an early retirement before I even got my drivers license, which inevitably led me onto a crash course with the nascent FIRE movement (via Mr. Money Mustache) back in early 2014 that completely changed my life. I found a framework to follow, and I discovered something very important: there were other people like me.

Now, 10 years later, I've accumulated a few scars, notched a few wins, and learned a thing or two about what it takes to actually implement everything I learned about pursuing Financial Independence through hundreds of blogs, videos, and help articles, and now I'd like to help make that adventure more streamlined for others that are eager to embark on that same journey.

I find myself near the same inflection point that Mr. Money Mustache was at when he started his blog back in 2008. Not quite at our FIRE number, but well on our way and oh-so-close – and it feels right to finally start sharing my perspective on how we got here by our early 30s.

The mission of the Fly FI Guy is really quite simple: teach everything I've learned about pursuing personal freedom and empowerment through the aspiration of financial independence, and do it while building a case-in-point example of a very small, sustainable business of one that can enable you to become financially free on its own merit.

To that end, the work I publish here will be completely unbiased with no outside financial entanglements to report. I will be motivated and incentivized solely by what I believe adds true value to the people that I'm helping, and the work will be supported by them without compromise.
